KVPY Scholarship

KVPY stands for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Scheme in India.

What is KVPY Scholarship

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a national level fellowship programme for students pursuing under-graduation, graduation, post-graduation studies in science stream.

The KVPY Aptitude Test is conducted by the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore every year and funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The main goal of this scheme is to encourage and motivate young students by providing scholarships and grants upto the pre-PhD level so that they can build their research career in Science. Around 28,000 students are being offered the KVPY Scholarship.

KVPY Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for KVPY Scholarship, students need to fulfill the following criteria which includes educational conditions for each stream-SA/SX/SB:

Stream SA: Students must enroll in XI Standard (Science Subjects) to avail KVPY Scholarship during the academic year. They must have secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board examination immediately in the preceding academic year.

Scholarship activation: The fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if they secure a minimum of  60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects in the XII standard/(+2) Board Examination and join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.) .

During the interim period of one year KVPY will invite students for the National  Science (Vijyoshi) Camp. KVPY will also pay their travel expenses and local hospitality.

Stream SX: Students must enroll in class XII (Science subjects) in undergraduate programmes in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to  B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. to apply the KVPY Scholarship during the academic year. They must have secured at least 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board examination two years prior academic year.

Scholarship activation: The fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if  they secure a minimum of  60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination and join an undergraduate course in Basic sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.).

Note– Students who are in 2nd in Cambridge International Examination Board and aspiring to join an UG program (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.)in Basic Sciences namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology are eligible to apply. But they should gain a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the X Standard Board Examination and 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination before taking up the fellowship.

Stream SB: Students who have cleared their XII Board Examination by having a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) and undertook the admission in the 1st year of undergraduate courses in basic science such as BSc./BS/BStat/BMath/ Int. M.Sc./ Int. M.S. during the academic session can register for KVPY Scholarship aptitude test. They will have to give proof of studying in the 1st year of the basic science courses in the form of a study certificate.

KVPY Scholarship Scholarship Activation

The fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if they obtain at least 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) aggregate marks in 1st-year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.

Empowerment initiative in the KVPY Fellowship Program:

A certain number of additional fellowships are exclusively available for the students who come under the category of Persons With Disability (Physically and Visually Challenged) or belong to SC/ST community under various streams as stated above.

Applicable Subjects for KVPY Scholarship

Undergraduate course in Basic Sciences, that is, B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science.

KVPY Scholarship Benefits and Rewards

Selected students will get the following benefits and rewards under KVPY Scholarship scheme:

  • For SA/SX/SB stream, the selected fellow will receive a monthly stipend of INR 5,000 and an annual contingency grant of INR 20,000 during 1st to 3rd years of BSc/ BS/ B.Stat./ B.Math./ MS/ Integrated MS.
  • Moreover, selected candidate will receive a monthly stipend of INR 7,000 and an annual contingency grant of INR 28,000 during M.Sc./ 4th to 5th years of integrated MSc/MS/M.Math./M.Stat.

How to apply for KVPY Scholarship

Candidates will be able to fill up the KVPY Scholarship Application form through online mode. The application process will consist of certain steps:

  • KVPY registration
  • Filling KVPY Scholarship Application form
  • Upload photo and signature
  • Making exam preference
  • Application fees payment

Steps to Fill KVPY Registration Form

  1. At first, visit the official website of KVPY Scholarship and then click on the Registration link.
  2. If your Registration is successful, you will get your User ID and password on registered contact number and email id.
  3. After that log in to the portal by using the credentials which you received on your registered email id or contact number.
  4. Then film the application form with necessary details such as personal and academic details, desired test centres and submit the form.
  5. Next, the candidates have to upload their soft copies of passport-sized photograph in JPG/JPEG format (less than 150 kb) and signature also in JPG/JPEG format (less than 80 kb).
  6. The SC/ST and PWD candidates must upload scanned copy of caste (SC and ST) and medical certificate (for PWD) in PDF format (less than 300 KB).
  7. Finally, candidates have to pay the application fees by using a Credit Card, ATM-Debit Card or Net Banking.

Please note that you must pay the application fee only at the  KVPY application portal. No other means of payment will be accepted.  Once the payment is successful and application is submitted, no refund of application fee will be done.

  1. Keep the print out of submitted application form for future reference and do not forget to take the transaction number or reference number for further use.
  • Note-  Students pursuing Science and currently in Class 11th will apply KVPY Scholarship under SA stream
  • Students pursuing Science and currently in Class 12th will apply KVPY Scholarship under SX scream.
  • Students pursuing a programme in Basic Science and currently in the first year of graduation have to choose SB stream of KVPY Scholarship.

 For General/OBC category the application fee is INR 1,250 and for SC/ST/PWD category the application fee is INR 625. Bank charges extra.

What are the important documents required in the KVPY Scholarship aptitude test?

Candidates appearing for KVPY Scholarship Aptitude test are advised to carry the documents mentioned below to their allotted exam center:

KVPY Scholarship Selection Process

Generally KVPY Scholarship follows a two-stage selection process.

KVPY Scholarship Stage I- Aptitude test

Candidates meeting the eligibility criteria for various streams, are called for  aptitude test conducted both in Hindi and English at different centers across the country. The KVPY aptitude test contains questions from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

KVPY Scholarship Stage II- Personal Interview

All the shortlisted candidates based on their performance in the aptitude test are called to appear for an interview which is the final stage of the selection process.

But in 2020, the selection was entirely based on the applicant’s performance in the aptitude test, no interview was conducted.

KVPY Scholarship Renewal of KVPY Scholarship

In order to renew the KVPY Scholarship, The Fellows have to continue study in Basic Science courses in school/junior college/university, and maintain a minimum level of academic performance of first class or 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate or equivalent grade points. In addition to this, they must pass all the subjects prescribed for that particular academic year (two semesters in case of semester system).

Besides these conditions, the Summer Camp in the first year and Summer project every year thereafter is required for renewal of the fellowship.

Terms and Conditions of KVPY Scholarship

  • KVPY does not allow its Fellows to receive simultaneously fellowship /scholarship from more than one source, either government or private. If any student is a receipt of any other fellowship or scholarship, he/she will have to relinquish it in order to avail the KVPY Fellowship.
