IDRC Doctoral Research Awards

Awards will cover the costs of field research conducted for a doctoral dissertation in one or more countries in the Global South. Regions of the Global South are defined as: Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, East Africa, southern Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Far East Asia, Caribbean, Central America, South America, Oceania.

Eligibility criteria:

This is open to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing doctoral studies at a Canadian university. (excluding countries in southern and eastern Europe, South Caucasus, and Central Asia but including Afghanistan).
You must be enrolled at a Canadian university at the doctoral level.
Your field research must be relevant to one of six development outcome areas-
- Health equity
- Inclusive governance
- Sustainable and inclusive growth
- Climate resilience and sustainable food systems
- Inclusive education
- Strong science and innovation systems

Award value- Approximately 20 awards of a maximum of $20,000 each.

Rio Tinto Graduate Scholarship Program

An $18,000 graduate scholarship (non renewable) is given to a UBC graduate student in a field of pure or applied science related to Rio Tinto’s activities in mining.

Hydrometallurgy

Science of the environment

Analytical technologies

Modeling and control systems

John W. Davies Memorial Award

One award of $3,000 is offered to any full time graduate student at a recognized University in Canada or the US State of Alaska.

Specifically the research may be in the areas of:

marine transportation,
development of offshore resources,
eco-systems interaction with development of Arctic/cold ocean resources,
climate change impact in marine cold regions, or
special areas of research for Arctic/cold ocean environments.

Aboriginal Graduate Fellowship Bridge Funding

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will distribute a maximum of $50,000 among selected Master’s and doctoral Indigenous students registered at the UBC ($8000 per student).

Eligibility criteria:

Applicants must be registered in a UBC graduate program as full-time students.
Students in the following programs are not eligible: MEng, MM, MBA, and PharmD.
To be eligible for AGF funding as a Master’s student, applicants must not have completed more than 12 months of full-time (or full-time equivalent) Master’s-level study.
To be eligible for AGF funding as a Doctoral student, applicants must not have completed more than 48 months of full-time (or full-time equivalent) Doctoral-level study.

Science & Scilifelab Prize for Young Scientists

This prize is awarded annually to one young scientist for outstanding life science research.

The topic of the entrant’s thesis research must be in one of the following categories: Cell and Molecular Biology; Genomics, Proteomics, and Systems Biology approaches; Ecology and Environment; Molecular Medicine.

USD 30,000 for the grand prize winner, USD 10,000 for each of the category winners.

Microsoft Research PhD Fellowships

Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship

$10,000 (not renewable) Fellowship is awarded annually to up to 35 women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences.

Students must be enrolled in a full-time Ph.D./doctoral program and have completed at least one year of that program or earned a Master’s degree in an aerospace-applied field at the time the application is submitted.
